UCLA Moves on From Offensive Coordinator Tino Sunseri, Promotes Jerry Neuheisel as Part of Coaching Restructuring
UCLA's football program undergoes significant changes as Tino Sunseri departs and Jerry Neuheisel takes on offensive play-calling responsibilities.
UCLA and offensive coordinator Tino Sunseri have mutually agreed to part ways effective immediately, as confirmed by a team spokesperson on Tuesday. This change adds to a coaching staff that is already undergoing significant adjustments following the firing of DeShaun Foster, the head coach, just three games into the season. Ikaika Malloe, the former defensive coordinator, has also been let go.
Starting this week, Jerry Neuheisel, the tight ends coach, will take over the offensive play-calling duties as UCLA prepares to face No. 7 Penn State in the upcoming game.
UCLA aims to bolster its offensive staff, with expectations that former coordinator Noel Mazzone, who held the position from 2012 to 2015, will return as an analyst, according to reports from the Los Angeles Times.
This Saturday marks Neuheisel’s debut as the offensive play-caller. He has been a part of the Bruins’ coaching staff since 2018, serving in various roles including graduate assistant and wide receivers coach.
The UCLA Bruins have struggled offensively this season, ranking 117th in total offense with an average of 321.2 yards per game, and even lower in scoring, sitting at 132nd place with only 14.2 points per game. This comes despite the addition of promising transfer quarterback Nico Iamaleava.
Sunseri was initially seen as a valuable addition after his successful season with Indiana, where he contributed to their rise in national prominence as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. However, his unit’s performance at UCLA was disappointing.
UCLA now faces the challenge of turning around its season to avoid adding to its recent disappointing history.
