Steve Kerr to Delay Contract Talks Until Offseason, Remains Untroubled
Warriors' head coach Steve Kerr confirms he won't negotiate his expiring contract during the season, focusing instead on the upcoming NBA campaign.
Steve Kerr is entering the last year of his contract with the Golden State Warriors as the 2025-26 NBA season approaches. Neither Kerr nor the Warriors are rushing to initiate discussions regarding a new agreement. In a statement made following the team’s first day of training camp, Kerr indicated that he does not foresee any contract negotiations during the season. Instead, he and the team’s front office aim to have a meeting next spring or summer to evaluate their future together.
This season marks the second year of a two-year, $35 million contract signed by Kerr in February 2024, which made him the highest-paid coach in NBA history, earning $17.5 million annually.
“I’m very comfortable just going into the season with a year left,” Kerr remarked. “I’m so aligned with Mike and Joe that we talked about this. There’s no reason for discussion, concern. This is kind of a point in our relationship where it’s like, let’s just see how it is at the end of the year.”
Kerr is seen as earning every bit of his recent extension, being a four-time NBA champion and highly regarded coach in league history, underscored by his six NBA Finals appearances and the record-setting 73-win season of 2015-16.
“I love my job, I love what I’m doing every day. I can’t wait to get to the building. Hopefully I’m here for another few years, but I think it makes sense for the organization and for me just to see where this thing is at the end of the year, where they are, where I am. Hopefully that means we run it back, we keep going with this group. That would be awesome. But I like the fact that we can just do it how we want to do it.”
The Warriors have had a relatively quiet offseason, re-signing almost all their free agents except for Kevon Looney and solely trading draft picks. The offseason’s main controversy involved a contract dispute with Jonathan Kuminga, who recently signed a two-year deal with the Warriors that resolved his restricted free agency status.
“I don’t anticipate any negotiation during the season,” Kerr stated. “Who knows, maybe it all comes up at some point – they come to me, whatever. But I’m not the slightest bit concerned about it. I don’t think about it. I just think it makes perfect sense for all of us.”
Kerr also noted that regardless of how the situation evolves, he expects it to conclude amicably.
The upcoming offseason could represent a pivotal moment for the franchise, as Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green will all reach the end of their contracts after the 2026-26 season, compelling the Warriors to make challenging decisions regarding their futures.
