Memphis Grizzlies' Edey and Jackson Jr. Out at Season's Start Following Surgery

The Memphis Grizzlies will start the 2025-26 season without key players Zach Edey and Jaren Jackson Jr. due to recent surgeries.

As the dawn of the 2025-26 NBA season nears, the Memphis Grizzlies are expected to kick off the year without pivotal players Zach Edey and Jaren Jackson Jr..

On Friday, the team revealed that Edey is projected to miss the initial two months of the season following ankle surgery. In contrast, Jackson faces a shorter recovery period and is anticipated to return in 4-6 weeks.

Currently, Jackson is cleared to commence basketball activities after a procedure to mend turf toe in his right foot, which he had done in early July.

Edey underwent surgery in early June to rectify laxity in his left ankle. The team has stated he is also cleared to gradually resume basketball activities and is expected back in 6-9 weeks.

In the previous season, Jackson, selected as the fourth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, delivered an impressive performance, averaging 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks across 74 games, securing his spot in the All-Star roster for the second time.

Edey, a two-time national player of the year from Purdue, missed 12 games last season due to a sprained left ankle. After participating in 66 games, making 55 starts, he averaged 9.2 points and led all rookies with 8.3 rebounds in the last season.

The Grizzlies also provided various other medical updates prior to training camp:

  • Brandon Clarke is set to undergo arthroscopic surgery to address knee synovitis affecting his right knee, a condition that arose during offseason training. Clarke had previously operated on his knee in mid-March for a high-grade sprain in his posterior cruciate ligament.
  • Cedric Coward, the 11th overall draft pick this summer, is expected to fully participate in camp after completing rehabilitation for his left shoulder injury sustained early last season at Washington State.
