LSU QB Garrett Nussmeier Will Not Require Surgery, Brian Kelly Declares Misleading Claims
Brian Kelly reassures fans that LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier won't need surgery after an abdominal strain, dismissing recent reports as misinformation.
LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier will not need surgery, coach Brian Kelly stated Wednesday, responding to reports suggesting the Tigers’ starter could face a long-term issue. Kelly clarified that Nussmeier experienced an abdominal strain early in the season, rather than a core injury, and is currently resting in preparation for a challenging segment of LSU’s schedule.
“That’s misinformation,” Kelly expressed during the SEC coaches teleconference. “Those claims are unfounded. They seem quite silly, actually. This is indeed misinformation.”
“Это дезинформация,” - сказал Келли на телеконференции SEC. “Эти заявления лишены оснований. Они, на самом деле, довольно глупы. Это действительно дезинформация.”
The Tigers’ offense has had a rough start this season, averaging just 27.0 points per game—ranking them 80th in the FBS. Although Nussmeier records a career-high completion rate of 67.3%, his average of 231.8 passing yards per game, along with seven touchdowns and three interceptions, indicates inconsistency in the Tigers’ offense during critical moments.
He passed for merely 197 yards with one touchdown and one interception during a 24-19 defeat to Ole Miss last Saturday.
Despite the slow start, Kelly asserted Nussmeier’s health is paramount, projecting that the quarterback will be back at full capacity as LSU enters a tougher phase of their schedule, with upcoming games against South Carolina, No. 16 Vanderbilt, No. 6 Texas A&M, and No. 10 Alabama, following a bye week.
Kelly noted that the team is strategically managing Nussmeier’s workload to prevent exacerbating the abdominal strain.
“It’s been slow to heal,” Kelly said. “But as I mentioned, he’s on the mend. He’ll be the Garrett Nussmeier he needs to be as we tackle the more difficult aspects of our schedule.”
“Восстановление идет медленно,” - сказал Келли. “Но, как я уже говорил, он на поправку. Он будет тем самым Гарретом Нусмайером, каким ему нужно быть, когда мы начнем тяжелые части нашего расписания.”
Earlier this season, LSU also managed a minor knee issue with Nussmeier that was aggravated in August, prompting the coaching staff to limit his practice intensity early on. This cautious management, along with the abdominal strain, has kept Nussmeier fit to compete, albeit not at peak performance yet.
