Nashville SC Claims Historic U.S. Open Cup Victory Over Austin FC

Nashville SC secures their first U.S. Open Cup title, marking a significant achievement in Tennessee's sports history.

The wait is finally over as Nashville SC has achieved a historic milestone by winning their first U.S. Open Cup title. They defeated Austin FC 2-1 during the match held at Q2 Stadium. Nashville SC, which began its journey in 2020, secured the trophy in only their second club final after earlier losing to Inter Miami in the 2023 Leagues Cup final.

Star striker Sam Surridge scored the decisive penalty, marking his sixth goal in the tournament and his 28th in all competitions. Despite Austin FC having opportunities, including a missed penalty by forward Myrto Uzuni, they could not change the outcome in a challenging atmosphere.

This victory is not only pivotal for Nashville SC but also represents Tennessee’s first professional sports trophy. For a team that has consistently performed well since joining MLS, this title is a well-deserved achievement.

B.J. Callaghan, the Austin FC manager, has experience in high-pressure games, having previously assisted the Philadelphia Union during three Open Cup finals that did not end in their favor. His expertise has been instrumental in preparing the team for important matches.

The match featured moments of excitement, including a penalty awarded in the second half, which shifted the momentum decisively in Nashville’s favor. Hany Mukhtar opened the scoring for Nashville, and with both teams eager to win their first trophy, it turned into an intense encounter.

Despite Surridge receiving a red card in stoppage time for a second yellow, Austin FC was unable to capitalize on the extra time available. As both teams now prepare for the upcoming MLS Cup playoffs, they have solidified their positions as fierce competitors.
