On the morning of September 30, 2025, the Milan City Council approved the sale of the renowned San Siro stadium to Inter and AC Milan. This moment marks the conclusion of a significant topic discussed in Italy over the past decade. Historically, the stadium was city-owned while both clubs leased it. The council’s decision, reached after an 11-hour debate, allows Inter and AC Milan to proceed with their plans to purchase and replace the current stadium with a new one in the same area, set for demolition.
With a vote tally of 24 votes in favor and 20 against, the clubs are anticipated to finalize the purchase for €197 million ($231 million) soon. They aim to complete the transaction before November, when the construction area will gain heritage status, making this decision pivotal for the stadium’s future.
Despite prior proposals failing, Inter and AC Milan have returned to collaborate on developing modern infrastructure on the over 28 hectares of public land where the stadium sits. Architectural firms Foster and Partners and MANICA have been designated to design the new venue, with details forthcoming.
San Siro will continue hosting events like the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics before its expected demolition, which won’t occur before 2031. The clubs plan to remain in their historical venue until the new stadium is ready, targeted for completion before Euro 2032, where Milan may co-host matches.
