USA Faces Tough Challenge from Ecuador as World Cup Aspirations Hang in the Balance

In a crucial preparation match, the U.S. team under coach Mauricio Pochettino aims for strong performances to secure World Cup roster spots.

AUSTIN, Texas — Whatever the outcome of the challenging World Cup preparation match against Ecuador on Friday night, U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino is confident about one thing.

“I promise you, no one is sure that he is going to be on the roster of the World Cup 2026,” Pochettino stated during a pre-match press event. “I don’t believe that was the case before. Today, I promise that all the guys feel they need to fight to be there. And that is priceless.”

This contest at Q2 Stadium marks nearly a year since Pochettino first led the U.S. Team, a memorable 2-0 friendly win against Panama.

Over the last year, Pochettino has encouraged American players to step out of their comfort zones, resulting in significant changes within the squad. The recent unexpected defeats to Panama and Canada have been described as a wake-up call for him and his coaching staff.

After omitting Weston McKennie from his September lineup and not including Yunus Musah in the current roster, Pochettino believes his players are now focused.

On the eve of the game, Pochettino revealed that star Christian Pulisic did not practice on Thursday and might be unavailable, along with left back Antonee Robinson and winger Alex Zendejas, both dealing with minor injuries.

Ecuador’s coach, Sebastián Beccacece, also faces challenges with their lineup, having left several key players, like Moises Caicedo, out for this match.

Despite this, other talents are present, such as Pervis Estupinan and Willian Pacho, with Ecuador enjoying an unbeaten streak in games since a World Cup qualifier loss in Brazil over a year ago.

McKennie commented on the challenge ahead: “They have speed.”

Pochettino’s squad is ready to embrace the opportunity against a South American opponent, as they aim to solidify their spots for the World Cup.
