AUSTIN, Texas – The day before the U.S. men’s national team’s friendly against Ecuador, head coach Mauricio Pochettino emphasized that the focus remains on performance over results. The match at Q2 Stadium, which concluded with a 1-1 draw, illuminated progress worth celebrating.
Pochettino, marking his first year in the role, has seen the USMNT shift from dismal results to a sense of normalcy. Their match against Ecuador, an opponent who notably employs a defensive strategy, saw Enner Valencia score first with a quick counterattack. Despite some issues in midfield coordination between Weston McKennie, Tanner Tessman, and Aidan Morris, the game highlighted the team’s potential, particularly as they look forward to the World Cup.
The USMNT displayed a tactical flexibility that their previous coach Gregg Berhalter did not instill. Pochettino implemented a back three and varied their play style depending on possession.
“I think we keep, now, playing the way that we plan to play,” expressed Pochettino post-match. He continued to discuss his tactical adjustments, emphasizing the need for players to adapt their roles based on the game situation.
The game also revealed mixed performances from the USMNT; while they missed several opportunities to score, they maintained over 65% possession, showcasing a new approach to attacking play.
In light of some star players not being present, such as Christian Pulisic, who came off the bench, the team is still finding its rhythm. Malik Tillman made a significant impact with an assist, while Folarin Balogun continues to establish himself as a key player.
Pochettino remarked on this evolution, stating it was refreshing to discuss strategy rather than commitment issues, marking a fundamental shift in team culture. “I think the performance was a very, very serious performance, very professional,” he affirmed. “This is a massive step up.”
