Boca Juniors coach Miguel Angel Russo has passed away at 69 years old, as confirmed by the club. Russo, who notably led Boca Juniors to victory in the 2007 Copa Libertadores, had been battling prostate cancer since 2017. In June 2025, despite his ongoing health challenges, he accepted his third term with the club.
Over his career, Russo managed multiple teams both in Argentina and abroad, including Al-Nassr from 2021 to 2022. In a heartfelt statement, Boca Juniors said, “Miguel Angel Russo leaves behind more than merely pleasant memories from his triumphs; it’s his style, methods, and enduring respect from colleagues and rivals alike that will linger. He was deeply committed to his craft and a relentless fighter through various challenges.”
Additionally, a tweet from Boca Juniors expressed their profound sorrow over his passing:
“El Club Atlético Boca Juniors comunica con profunda tristeza el fallecimiento de Miguel Ángel Russo. Miguel deja una huella imborrable en nuestra institución y será siempre un ejemplo de alegría, calidez y esfuerzo.”
*Translation: The club communicates with deep sadness the passing of Miguel Angel Russo. Miguel leaves an indelible mark on our institution and will always be an example of joy, warmth, and effort."
Following his passing, numerous clubs including Real Madrid extended their condolences. Russo recently participated in the FIFA Club World Cup, but had to step back from active management due to worsening health conditions. His last match was on September 21 against Central Cordoba at the Bombonera stadium.
A significant figure in Argentinian soccer, Russo also coached teams like San Lorenzo, Racing Club, and spent his entire playing career at Estudiantes, where he won two league titles in 1982 and 1983.
