Erik Spoelstra Identified as Leading Candidate for USA Basketball Coach at 2028 Olympics
Erik Spoelstra is poised to take over as head coach for the USA men's basketball team as they prepare for upcoming international competitions.
Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat is being considered to lead the U.S. men’s basketball team for the 2027 World Cup in Qatar and the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
While discussions are ongoing, an official announcement has not yet been made. Spoelstra would succeed Steve Kerr, who previously guided the American squad to a gold medal in Paris last summer. Spoelstra served as part of the coaching team that achieved that success, and in a post-game interview, he stated that it would be an honor to helm the program if called upon.
If appointed, he would be the first coach from the Heat to take on this role.
This development follows the recent decision by USA Basketball to name Kara Lawson as the coach for the women’s national team leading up to the Olympic Games.
Erik Spoelstra, whose father, Jon Spoelstra, held executive roles with the NBA teams like Portland and Denver, played high school basketball in Oregon before advancing to the University of Portland, where he was recognized as the West Coast Conference’s Freshman of the Year. He subsequently played professionally in Germany before joining the Heat’s coaching staff in 1995.
As he embarks on his 18th season with the Heat, Spoelstra currently holds the title of the longest-tenured coach in the league following Gregg Popovich’s retirement from the San Antonio Spurs. His coaching accolades include two NBA championships as head coach and another as an assistant under Pat Riley in 2006. He has also contributed to USA Basketball under Kerr.
At 54, Spoelstra’s record stands at 787-572 across his 17 seasons leading the Heat.
