Malcolm Brogdon Announces Retirement Ahead of Knicks Season Opener
After nine seasons in the NBA, former Rookie of the Year Malcolm Brogdon has decided to retire.
Malcolm Brogdon, a guard for the New York Knicks, has announced his retirement at the age of 32, as reported by ESPN on Wednesday. This decision comes just one week before the Knicks’ opening game against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
“Today, I officially begin my transition out of my basketball career,” Brogdon stated in a message. “I have proudly given my mind, body, and spirit to the game over the last few decades. With the many sacrifices it took to get here, I have received many rewards. I am deeply grateful to have arrived at this point on my own terms and now to be able to reap the benefits of my career with my family and friends. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to all who have had a place in my journey.”
Brogdon recently signed a one-year deal with the Knicks. Although he was expected to enhance the team’s backcourt depth behind Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart, injuries have limited him. He participated in all four preseason games but only played 63 games in the last two seasons.
At the beginning of his career, Brogdon was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks as the 36th overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft and won the Rookie of the Year award in his debut season. After four years with the Bucks, he was traded to the Indiana Pacers, followed by a stint with the Boston Celtics.
In Boston, he played a crucial bench role and won the Sixth Man of the Year award in 2023. His legacy as a two-time award recipient—Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year—puts him in an elite company within NBA history.
