The USWNT's U-23 Focus: Key Insights from Emma Hayes and Jaedyn Shaw's Impact

With the USWNT set to resume action, Emma Hayes emphasizes the importance of U-23 players while Jaedyn Shaw showcases her potential.

The U.S. women’s national soccer team is preparing to return to the field after an extensive summer break. With no matches due to global tournaments in various regions, head coach Emma Hayes has assembled a 26-player squad for the upcoming October friendlies against Portugal and New Zealand.

Upcoming Challenges

The Concacaf W Championship, set for November 2026, serves as the qualifying tournament for the Women’s World Cup. The USWNT, along with Canada, currently stands as the top-ranked team in the region, eagerly awaiting the outcomes of the qualifiers starting next month.

Hayes emphasized, “This preparation is crucial as we build towards qualifying next year, but many tough decisions had to be made for the roster.” She explained that by selecting 26 players, she aims to balance participation with the ongoing NWSL playoffs, allowing players to contribute at both the international and club levels.

Emphasizing Development via U-23

Hayes is committed to fostering the U-23 program as a vital extension of the national team’s talent pool. The revival of this program earlier this year is designed to enhance development opportunities for younger players. She noted, “We understand the need to provide ample growth possibilities for younger athletes. We aim for seamless transitions between the USWNT and the U-23 teams.

Jaedyn Shaw, a 20-year-old midfielder and recent addition to Gotham FC, has impressed during her time across both senior and U-23 camps this year. Hayes shared, “Shaw and her peers exemplify the fruitful synergy between the U-23 and senior teams. We’re keen to maximize their potential, including facing tough European competition in future camps.”
