Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch’s appeal of his one-game suspension for fighting after his team’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs has been heard and upheld, meaning Branch will miss the Lions’ Week 7 match against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and forfeit his game check. According to the NFL, Branch’s appeal was presided over by Jordy Nelson, a veteran receiver currently serving as an appeals officer for the league.
Branch started the conflict after the Lions’ 30-17 defeat to the Chiefs by punching receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster following the final kneeldown, which escalated into a larger confrontation between the teams. His actions received public condemnation from Lions head coach Dan Campbell, and Branch expressed regret, citing his frustration with Smith-Schuster’s behavior during the game.
“I did something quite immature,” Branch stated. “I’m weary of certain behaviors during plays that officials miss. They attempt to intimidate me on the field. I shouldn’t have acted that way; it was childish.”
Branch’s suspension adds to an already long list of disciplinary actions against him by the NFL, having been fined 14 times throughout his career, four of which occurred this season. Prior to Sunday night, he had accumulated fines totaling $34,784 for one unsportsmanlike conduct violation and two unnecessary roughness calls.
His absence will leave the Lions defense without one of their most formidable players ahead of another challenging matchup as they prepare to face the 5-1 Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night.
