Trinity Rodman Injury Update: USWNT Star Taking It Day by Day with MCL Sprain

Trinity Rodman is recovering from an MCL sprain as she prepares for upcoming friendlies with the USWNT.

U.S. women’s national team star Trinity Rodman exited the Washington Spirit’s game on Wednesday with an undisclosed leg injury. Following scans, it was confirmed that she has an MCL sprain. Rodman left the field in the 41st minute of the Spirit’s 4-0 victory over Monterrey during the Concacaf W Champions Cup, having fallen during an attempted tackle.

Adrian Gonzalez, the Spirit’s coach, stated that Rodman will be evaluated daily during her recovery, emphasizing that although an injury is challenging, it isn’t the worst-case scenario. He noted that the initial assessment is optimistic and they are starting her rehab immediately.

“She has an MCL sprain. It’s not too big, too much, but we need to see how she’s doing every day, start the rehab today, and try to support her in this situation.”

This injury coincided with Rodman receiving her first USWNT call-up since April, after battling through a chronic back injury. Despite these challenges, she has already contributed significantly to the Spirit, scoring seven goals and providing two assists this season.

The USWNT’s upcoming friendlies include two matches against Portugal on October 23 and 26, along with another match against New Zealand on October 29. Meanwhile, the Spirit aims to secure their playoff position following a second-place finish in the NWSL.

Who Will Replace Rodman?

If Rodman is unfit to participate, USWNT head coach Emma Hayes has talented replacements like Michelle Cooper, Ally Sentnor, Yazmeen Ryan, and Emma Sears, who have all shown promising performances recently. Hayes has utilized them effectively throughout the year, especially in absence of other star players. There will be ample opportunity for these players to showcase their skills during the upcoming three games.
