Aaron Jones Set to Return from Injury: Vikings Designate Star RB for Potential Play Against Chargers

Aaron Jones is on track to return from injured reserve, possibly playing against the Chargers this Thursday, following a hamstring injury sustained in Week 2.

The Minnesota Vikings have designated their prominent running back Aaron Jones to return from injured reserve, opening a 21-day practice window for his return. Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reported that Jones might be ready to return this Thursday against the Los Angeles Chargers on “Thursday Night Football.”

Jones was placed on IR after a loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2 due to a hamstring injury. He accumulated only 46 rushing yards on 13 carries in the first two games. He also made three catches for 44 yards, including a 27-yard touchdown against the Chicago Bears in Week 1, contributing to his team’s victory.

The 30-year-old had a career-best 1,138 rushing yards in 2024 after signing with Minnesota last offseason, having previously played seven years for the Green Bay Packers. He signed a two-year, $20 million contract extension earlier this offseason.

While Jones was sidelined, Jordan Mason has been the primary ball carrier, rushing for 380 yards and four touchdowns. He had a notable 116-yard game against the Cincinnati Bengals while Jones was out.

Getting Jones back is a significant advantage for the Vikings in preparation for a vital Week 8 clash against the Chargers. Minnesota’s record stands at 3-3, having experienced alternating wins and losses this season, and they have been without starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy since the September 14 loss against the Falcons.
