It was almost crisis mode for Liverpool as Eintracht Frankfurt went ahead in the 26th minute of play on Wednesday in the Champions League, but it was Hugo Ekitike who had a deft finish to bring the Reds level and spark a come-from-behind victory. The Reds went into Frankfurt and ended a four-match losing streak in all competitions with an emphatic 5-1 victory.
The match was a return for Ekitike to his former club after leaving Frankfurt for Liverpool during the summer, but with Alexander Isak also joining the Reds, it seemed like Ekitike would be headed to the bench. With Mohamed Salah being rested, the French forward showcased his versatility, starting on the right wing and scoring a lovely goal, along with taking three shots.
Liverpool went on the counter and Ekitike took a long run before finishing past Frankfurt keeper Michael Zetterer. This marked his fifth goal in just his eighth start for Liverpool, a feat achieved only seven times in the last 60 years.

Frankfurt have allowed a staggering 10 goals in their last two Champions League matches, indicating issues for Liverpool as Ekitike could assume a role as the main striker. At the half, coach Slot replaced Isak, who suffered a groin injury—an ongoing concern for him—bringing in a winger in Federico Chiesa to shift Ekitike to the nine.
Isak, having netted only one goal and one assist since joining the Reds, is far below expectations following a strong season at Newcastle. With Ekitike performing well, it seems sensible for him to secure more starting opportunities while Isak comes off the bench.
Liverpool’s next challenge will be against Brentford, where they aim to replicate their success from the match against Frankfurt.
