The Miami Dolphins offense faced overwhelming challenges in their 31-6 defeat to the Cleveland Browns last week. Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa managed to throw for only 100 yards while suffering three interceptions before being pulled in favor of rookie Quinn Ewers in the fourth quarter.
A noteworthy point from Sunday’s game was that Dolphins receiver Jaylen Waddle was targeted merely four times and caught just one pass for a total of 15 yards. During a Wednesday interview, Tagovailoa disclosed that his height posed limitations on his ability to effectively pass to his star receiver.
“Some of it has to do with being able to see guys … I’m not the tallest guy in the back there either,” Tagovailoa admitted, standing at 6-foot-1. “So being able to see and then sometimes when that happens, you don’t want to just throw it blindly, and you gotta progress. So I think that has some merit to, reasons as to why that happened for Waddle.”
Tagovailoa’s performance saw him completing only 12 out of 23 attempts, while he faced two sacks and suffered three interceptions in the second half. The first interception occurred on the opening play of the third quarter when Cleveland’s Tyson Campbell returned it 34 yards for a touchdown, further extending the Browns’ lead to 24-6. The second interception happened on a 3rd and 12 from the Miami 3-yard line, almost converting into another pick-six. The Browns capitalized with a touchdown on the next play. His passer rating for the game was a disappointing 24.1.
Despite recent struggles, coach Mike McDaniel reassured that Tagovailoa will remain the starting quarterback against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 8. Tagovailoa has thrown three interceptions in consecutive games, becoming the first NFL quarterback to achieve this since Philip Rivers in 2019.
