NCAA Approves Betting Regulations for College Athletes Effective November 1
The NCAA's new regulations will permit college athletes and staff to engage in betting on professional sports while maintaining prohibitions on college sports betting.
The NCAA approved a significant rule modification on Wednesday permitting college athletes and athletics staff to bet on professional sports, effective from November 1.
Two weeks post the Division I cabinet’s sanction, the Division II and III management councils also supported this rule change.
It’s crucial to note that betting on college sports remains prohibited by the NCAA, as does the sharing of college competition information with gamblers, and no sponsorships from betting entities for NCAA championships are allowed either.
NCAA President Charlie Baker expressed expectations regarding the approval of this new regulation during his media interaction at a Big East roundtable about the future of college basketball on Monday.
“This change acknowledges the realities of today’s sports landscape without jeopardizing our adherence to the integrity of college competition and the welfare of student-athletes,” stated Roberta Page, director of athletics at Slippery Rock and chair of the Division II Management Council.
This adjustment comes in response to increasing NCAA enforcement cases related to sports betting violations. Just last month, the NCAA formally banned three men’s college basketball players for betting on their own games, resulting in payouts worth thousands of dollars.
