From rock-bottom to the Champions League spots, Sunderland stormed into Stamford Bridge and clinched a 2-1 victory over Chelsea. Following their promotion back to the Premier League, hopes were high that after making strategic transfers, they’d find their footing and avoid a third consecutive season where all newly promoted teams faced relegation. They are now in a position to do something not accomplished since the 2020-21 season by fellow Premier League returnees Leeds United.

This season has seen Sunderland record 17 points, almost halfway to the usual 40-point safety mark in the Premier League, under Regis Le Bris. They’ve also demonstrated incredible defensive strength, allowing only seven goals thus far, and while they are slightly overperforming in expected goals allowed, their recent performances indicate a strong and cohesive team.
The season’s ongoing challenges for other teams like Nottingham Forest, West Ham United, and Wolves in the relegation zone highlight that now is the time for Sunderland to prove their place among the best, showcasing that they are indeed back in the Premier League for the long haul.
