Texas A&M's Unique Game Preparation Against LSU
Texas A&M's recent victory over LSU featured a unique practice tool that added a personal touch to the game.
No. 3 Texas A&M’s 49-25 victory against No. 20 LSU in Baton Rouge was deeply personal for one member of the Aggies’ coaching staff. For 21 years, Tommy Moffitt was the strength and conditioning coach for the Tigers until he was released by coach Brian Kelly when he took over in late 2021 from Notre Dame. After a brief hiatus from football, Moffitt joined Texas A&M under head coach Mike Elko, taking up the position of director of strength and conditioning.
If additional motivation was needed for the Aggies before playing at Tiger Stadium, Moffitt provided it by bringing in a tackling dummy emblazoned with Kelly’s face for Thursday’s practice, a fact shared by quarterback Marcel Reed with reporters in the lead-up to the matchup.
“Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed said Tommy Moffitt brought a tackle dummy with Brian Kelly’s face on it to practice Thursday. LOL.”

After trailing 18-14 at halftime, Texas A&M asserted their dominance in the second half, remaining atop the SEC standings alongside Alabama. Reed demonstrated his skills by completing 12 of 21 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns, also adding 108 rushing yards and two additional rushing touchdowns in this decisive win.
This latest win marks Texas A&M’s eighth victory, and they have now triumphed over Kelly’s team for the second consecutive year during Elko’s tenure. Last season, the Aggies staged a dramatic comeback to win 38-23. Previously, they managed to score 35 unanswered points in the second half in this last encounter, putting Kelly’s job security in jeopardy as the Tigers appear poised to miss the College Football Playoff once again.
This situation is likely appreciated by Moffitt after he was replaced when Kelly opted to appoint Jake Flint from South Bend.
