Texas Stages Dramatic Comeback to Defeat Mississippi State in Overtime
Texas achieved a historic comeback, scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter to secure a thrilling 45-38 overtime victory against Mississippi State.
No. 22 Texas fought back from a 17-point deficit, scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter to achieve a 45-38 overtime victory against Mississippi State. This match marks the Longhorns’ largest comeback since they erased a 21-point deficit in 2007 against Oklahoma State.
This victory is only the second time in program history that Texas has secured multiple overtime wins in a season. They previously faced a similar challenge against Kentucky in Week 8.
Texas found themselves down 38-21 with just 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter after Blake Shapen connected with Davon Booth for a 62-yard touchdown. However, the Longhorns retaliated quickly with a nine-play, 75-yard scoring drive, culminating in a 21-yard touchdown connection between quarterback Arch Manning and wide receiver Emmett Mosley V. The team’s defense forced a quick three-and-out, allowing kicker Mason Shipley to hit a 26-yard field goal, narrowing Mississippi State’s lead to 38-31.
Instead of using the clock, Mississippi State again went three-and-out, allowing Texas’ Ryan Niblett to return the subsequent punt 79 yards for the game-tying touchdown with 1:47 remaining. Niblett previously showcased his talent against Kentucky, returning two punts for 88 yards, and he also had a punt return touchdown against Oklahoma.
Mississippi State barely neared field goal territory at the end of regulation, but Shapen’s fumble forced a punt in the dying seconds of the fourth quarter. In overtime, Manning exited after sustaining an injury, paving the way for backup Matthew Caldwell to step in. Caldwell’s second play saw him delivering an exceptional pass to Mosley, resulting in a touchdown in the first possession of overtime.
From there, Texas’ defense sealed the game, forcing Mississippi State into a fourth-and-20 situation, capped by a 32-yard sack from Ethan Burke to end the Bulldogs’ final chance at a comeback.
Despite his exit, Manning had one of his best performances, completing 29 passes for 346 yards and three touchdowns, alongside adding a rushing touchdown. With the win, Texas improves to 6-2 on the season and 3-1 in SEC play. Next, they face a formidable opponent in No. 10 Vanderbilt.
