EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – For U.S. women’s national team head coach Emma Hayes, much of the last year has been about planning for the long-term. She discusses continuously how learning never stops for players, emphasizing her role in providing as much knowledge as possible before settling on personnel and tactics for the 2027 Women’s World Cup. While it’s early in Hayes’ transformation of the USWNT, a 3-1 victory over Portugal served as a significant indicator – the future may indeed be now.
Hayes made eight lineup changes in this re-match effort after the 2-1 loss to Portugal three days earlier. Ten of the starters had only a total of 100 caps combined, showcasing a youthful roster. Center back Emily Sonnett had 111 caps before the match, highlighting the potential growth of the younger players during this transitional period.
The team’s success with a new midfield lineup resulted in quick rewards as Olivia Moultrie netted two goals in the opening 10 minutes of the game, displaying the effectiveness of the fresh approach.
“They performed as I expected,” Hayes commented after the match, distinguishing the tactical improvements made compared to previous outings.
Despite some defensive vulnerabilities, the success of the youthful midfield marks a promising outcome as the team evolves under Hayes’ leadership. Every player’s development continues to be paramount in this phase as they gear towards future competitions.
