Kirby Smart Reflects on LSU's Expectations After Brian Kelly's Dismissal

Georgia's Kirby Smart shares insights on the pressures faced by LSU after the firing of coach Brian Kelly, based on his own experiences at the university.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart reflected on the challenges faced by LSU after their recent decision to fire coach Brian Kelly. Smart’s experience as LSU’s defensive backs coach in 2004 provides him with valuable insights into the high-pressure environment prevalent in Baton Rouge.

Smart acknowledged the increasing trend of midseason coaching changes in college football, emphasizing the unique pressures that accompany top-tier programs. “I know it’s high expectations,” Smart noted, recalling advice he received during his tenure at LSU about the impermanence of coaching positions.

LSU’s announcement came after a disappointing 5-3 record this season, following a heavy loss to #3 Texas A&M, which effectively eliminated their hopes for a place in the College Football Playoff. Athletic director Scott Woodward stated that the decision was based on unmet expectations and performance inadequacies as far as winning titles are concerned.

Smart’s understanding of these pressures is mixed with an acknowledgment of the fact that he is not privy to the internal decision-making at LSU regarding Kelly’s exit.
