Reviving the Rivalry: Coaches Call for Notre Dame vs. Michigan Showdown
Marcus Freeman and Sherrone Moore push for a more frequent renewal of the historic college football rivalry.
In the realm of shifting conference dynamics and extended league schedules, some historic rivalries have receded into history. Notably, Notre Dame and Michigan, represented by their respective coaches Marcus Freeman and Sherrone Moore, are advocating for the revival of their long-standing rivalry.
In recent statements, both Freeman and Moore expressed their desire to compete against each other more regularly. Although there are plans for a home-and-home series in the future, scheduled for 2033 and 2024, the coaches hope to see these matchups happen sooner.
During an interview on Bussin’ with the Boys, Freeman conveyed his enthusiasm for re-establishing this esteemed rivalry, recalling fond memories of watching the games growing up. He emphasized, “I remember growing up watching Michigan play Notre Dame. That is such a great rivalry… We have to get that back going.”
Also echoing Freeman’s sentiments, Moore indicated in a press conference that while they are aligned to play in the future, he would like to rekindle this rivalry soon, asserting its importance in college football history.
The rivalry between Notre Dame and Michigan dates back to 1887, with a nearly consistent annual series starting in the late 1970s. The two teams last competed in 2019, and with Michigan leading the all-time matchup 25-17-1, the anticipation grows for a future revival.
