The NBA has commenced a review of its policies following the recent arrests of Miami guard Terry Rozier and Portland coach Chauncey Billups, who were implicated in gambling schemes.

The league’s findings were detailed in a memo circulated to all 30 teams, which was obtained by the Associated Press.

“Given the spread of legal betting across most states in the U.S., the ongoing integrity issues in sports, and the rise of new betting formats, now is the perfect moment to reevaluate how sports betting is regulated, and how leagues can safeguard themselves and their participants,” stated the memo from the NBA’s legal department.

Last week, a pair of indictments revealed that almost thirty individuals, including Billups and Rozier, were apprehended by federal authorities.

Rozier allegedly conspired with others to manipulate bets based on his own game performance while he was still with Charlotte on March 23, 2023. This charge mirrors those faced by former Toronto player Jontay Porter, who was banned by Commissioner Adam Silver in 2024.

Irregular betting patterns were noted in the Charlotte game concerning Rozier, and these anomalies were promptly reported to the NBA, which conducted an investigation but found insufficient evidence to assert that Rozier violated any rules.

“While the unusual betting on Terry Rozier’s performance was observed in real time, because the wagers were legally placed, we believe further legal and regulatory measures should be enacted to ensure the integrity of the NBA and its leagues. In particular, proposition bets on individual player outcomes raise significant integrity concerns that require further oversight,” emphasized the league in communications to its teams.

The league will also aim to scrutinize injury reports more thoroughly. Currently, the NBA publishes injury reports every hour, and teams must report player status within specific time frames before their next game, a practice instituted to enhance transparency.

Information regarding injury status can inform bettor decisions, making it critical for the public to have equal access to such data to prevent insider trading. Former NBA player Damon Jones is currently facing charges for allegedly providing bettors with confidential health information about two Los Angeles Lakers players before their statuses were publicly released.

Federal officials also mentioned similar tipping incidents involving other teams.

“As sports betting continues to increasingly impact the sports landscape, it’s vital to ensure players, coaches, and NBA officials are fully aware of the severe risks gambling presents to their careers and financial security; that injury disclosure protocols are fitting; and that players are safeguarded against harassment from bettors,” the memo indicated.

Furthermore, the league is soliciting feedback from teams on how to advance moving forward.
