Monday was another monumental evening for Sidney Crosby and the surprising Pittsburgh Penguins. Along with leading the Penguins to their fifth victory in six games, Crosby made NHL history by becoming the ninth player to hit 1,700 career points and is the fourth-fastest to achieve this feat.
Only Wayne Gretzky, fellow Penguins legend Mario Lemieux, and Marcel Dionne amassed 1,700 points in fewer matches than Crosby, who marked this milestone in his 1,362nd appearance. He surpassed another Penguins icon, Jaromir Jagr, who reached his 1,700th point in 1,408 contests.
Crosby is also one of only four players to score 1,700 points with a single team, contributing three points in the Penguins’ 6-3 win over the St. Louis Blues. He notched two assists and scored his seventh goal of the season early in the third period.
At 38, he further made franchise history by overtaking Lemieux’s record for the most multi-point games in Penguins history, marking his 498th career multi-point game.

Crosby isn’t alone in his strong start to the 2025-26 season. Evgeni Malkin, who recently set the record for the longest-tenured teammates in U.S. sports history alongside Crosby and defenseman Kris Letang, leads the NHL with 13 assists and is tied for the league lead with 16 points. The 39-year-old Malkin had a goal and an assist on Monday as the Penguins improved to 7-2-1.

Malkin and Crosby are two key contributors to the Penguins’ unexpected success this season. Under first-year head coach Dan Muse, Pittsburgh is off to its best 10-game start since the 2014-15 season, aiming for their first playoff appearance since the 2021-22 campaign.
