Gio Reyna Refuses to Bear Sole Responsibility for USMNT's 2022 World Cup Issues

Gio Reyna discusses the controversy surrounding his playing time and family feud with former coach Gregg Berhalter during the 2022 World Cup.

Gio Reyna expressed that the animosity which arose due to a conflict between his family and former U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) head coach, Gregg Berhalter, after the 2022 World Cup was a result of his disappointment regarding his limited playing time. He affirmed that he will not accept all the responsibility for the ensuing saga that unfolded.

Reyna, who was included in Berhalter’s squad despite dealing with a muscle injury he suffered prior, noted that during the World Cup, he played a mere 52 minutes as the team reached the round of 16. He recalled moments of disagreement with Berhalter concerning his fitness, which followed Berhalter’s remarks post-elimination that suggested one player almost faced dismissal from the team based on performance and conduct issues.

“Ultimately, I was frustrated because I wasn’t playing. I was active with Dortmund, and it was disappointing to miss out on opportunities to contribute during the World Cup,” Reyna said in a recent interview.

After Berhalter’s comments ignited a family feud, Reyna’s mother, Danielle, informed U.S. Soccer about a domestic violence incident from Berhalter’s past, which led to an investigation that cleared him of any misconduct.

Looking back, Reyna acknowledged he might handle some aspects differently but insists the narrative shouldn’t solely rest on him or his family. “I won’t take all the blame for something that others may interpret as completely my fault,” he stated.

Reflecting on the experience, Reyna suggested he prefers not to dwell on it anymore, citing desire to contribute positively to his country’s squad as his main frustration. He remarked on his career since and expressed hopes for improved opportunities with the current coach Mauricio Pochettino. Reyna’s determination aligns with his ambition to earn a spot on the upcoming World Cup roster by showcasing his performance at Borussia Monchengladbach.
