James Rodríguez May Depart Club León, Eyeing MLS Move Before World Cup
Colombian star James Rodríguez is expected to leave Club León once his contract ends, with potential opportunities in MLS as he prepares for the upcoming World Cup.
James Rodríguez is likely to leave Club León following the conclusion of the Apertura 2025 season, with his contract expiring in December and no intentions to renew from either party. With only six months remaining before the 2026 World Cup, the former Real Madrid player is expected to explore a new team, possibly moving to MLS or remaining within Liga MX.
An Impending Departure
Reports suggest that Rodríguez’s chapter at Club León will close as the Apertura 2025 comes to an end. He joined La Fiera on a one-year contract, motivated by the opportunity to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup. Unfortunately, León’s entry was revoked by FIFA due to ownership breaches, denying James that platform for international exposure.
His tenure has not met expectations, with the team eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Clausura 2025 and currently positioned at 17th place in the Apertura standings. Rodríguez’s impact has diminished, netting only three goals in 12 appearances this season and a total of five over 32 matches.
Open to New Opportunities
Even with coach Ignacio Ambriz’s arrival, León’s performance did not improve, highlighted by recent losses against Toluca, Santos, and Atlas, alongside a draw with Pumas. It seems that parting ways may benefit both the club and Rodríguez in pursuing their respective futures.
Interest from MLS
Several prominent Liga MX teams are reportedly monitoring Rodríguez’s situation as his contract expiration approaches, and teams in MLS have shown interest in acquiring the Golden Boot winner from the 2014 World Cup.
With the 2026 World Cup approaching, Rodríguez is at a critical juncture for the next phase of his career, a decision that may shape his final years in professional soccer.
Future of Club León
Club León has two demanding matches left in the Apertura 2025 season, starting with an away game against America on Matchday 16 followed by a home match against Puebla on Matchday 17. Their aim is to conclude the season positively.
