Patience Required as Mexico Trusts Aguirre for 2026 World Cup

Despite recent setbacks, Mexico's football federation remains optimistic about its team under coach Javier Aguirre as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup.

Despite recent challenges in performance, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) is maintaining its confidence in Javier Aguirre as El Tri gears up for the 2026 World Cup. Aguirre, an experienced coach, has been tasked with stabilizing the team amid a transitional phase, despite facing criticism due to disappointing results.

Aguirre Committed to the World Cup

Gold Cup

Mexico secured victory in the Gold Cup earlier this summer but is intent on a strong showing at the World Cup in 2026.

Ivar Sisniega, the FMF president, supported Aguirre, arguing against any narratives of change in leadership. He emphasized that the federation’s long-term objectives remain intact. Recent matches include a heavy 4-0 defeat to Colombia and draws against Japan, South Korea, and Ecuador.

“Javier has created a great atmosphere within the team and transmitted the level of commitment he expects from his players,” Sisniega said. “Things are on the right track. We need patience. It’s a process, and he must continue defining the lineup that will reach the World Cup. There are still several key dates ahead.”

He added that Aguirre is crucial for fostering unity and focus within the team.

“He’s been fundamental for this team,” the FMF president remarked. “He’s built a positive environment and has the full trust of the players. We believe he’s going in the right direction.”

As attention shifts to the future, Sisniega mentioned the potential integration of young talents from the recent 2023 U20 World Cup into the senior team, with aspirations gravitating towards the 2030 World Cup.

“We all saw the great quality of that generation. Most of that group is more for 2030, but it’s possible that one or two could make the jump,” he noted.

What Lies Ahead for Mexico?

The national team is set to face Uruguay on November 15 in Torreón and Paraguay on November 18 at the Alamodome, with expectations that Aguirre will reveal a lineup nearly identical to that which will compete at the World Cup in June.
