Ja Morant Suspended for Detrimental Behavior Against Raptors
Ja Morant faces suspension due to conduct deemed damaging to the Memphis Grizzlies ahead of their game against the Toronto Raptors.
The Memphis Grizzlies have announced the suspension of their two-time All-Star guard Ja Morant for their upcoming game against the Toronto Raptors, citing conduct that is detrimental to the team.
Morant recently scored just eight points during a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday, struggling to engage in post-game discussions, often deflecting questions back to the coaching staff.
His performance showcased a lack of involvement, even distancing himself from the bench during a timeout. When probed about his game performance, he reiterated, “Go ask them,” in reference to the coaching staff, and did not score in the second half of the game. He did state later, “According to them, probably don’t play me, honestly; that’s what basically the message was after. It’s cool.”
In the fourth quarter of that match, Morant logged over eight minutes on the court but missed all of his attempts during the latter half of the game.
This suspension marks another instance in a series of disciplinary actions against him, including two suspensions in 2023 that cost him 33 games and a substantial salary loss of approximately $8.3 million. Additionally, he faced a fine of $75,000 last season for inappropriate gestures made during games, which the NBA deemed unsuitable due to prior warnings about the implications of such actions.
Currently, Morant is earning around $39.4 million this season, amidst a five-year contract worth $197.2 million, with an average of 20.8 points per game through the first six games of the current season.
