The College Football Playoff Selection Committee’s inaugural top 25 rankings of the 2025 season are set to be revealed this Tuesday night, shining a spotlight on how this committee perceives the top college teams based on various criteria.
The rankings will come along with a detailed overview of “record strength,” a recently introduced metric aimed at rewarding teams for their performance against quality opponents while mitigating the impact of losses to stronger teams.
According to CFP guidelines, the committee evaluates teams based on performance, conference championships, strength of schedule, head-to-head results, and comparisons against common opponents to differentiate between comparable teams.
Each of the 13 committee members establishes a list of 30 teams they believe are the best in college football. This collective input is used to further refine and rank the selections when three or more members align on teams.
The initial rankings will be the first of five releases leading up to Selection Sunday in December, following the outcomes of conference championships across both Power Four and Group of Six divisions.
