Wisconsin Announces Luke Fickell's Retention: Athletic Director Confirms Coach's Future Through 2026
Chris McIntosh, the Wisconsin athletic director, confirmed the retaining of coach Luke Fickell for another season amid ongoing evaluations and increased investment in the program.
Wisconsin’s athletic director Chris McIntosh confirmed that Luke Fickell will continue as the head coach through the 2026 season. McIntosh expressed the commitment to evaluate the athletic program further while ramping up financial backing for improvements.
“Chancellor [Jennifer] Mnookin and I are aligned on significantly elevating investment in our program to compete at the highest level,” McIntosh stated. “We are willing to make an investment in infrastructure and staff. Additionally, we must retain and recruit players during a time of revenue sharing and NIL challenges.”
Fickell has recorded a 14-19 overall record during his three seasons at the helm, with his Badgers struggling in the Big Ten, not securing a conference victory since October 19, 2024. Currently, they hold a disappointing 2-6 record for the 2025 season, including an 0-5 conference record. Wisconsin’s six defeats have averaged a troubling 23.3-point deficit, and they have not surpassed 14 points in any game against formidable rivals this season.
This situation may lead to a second consecutive year without a bowl game for the Badgers, breaking a streak of 22 straight postseason appearances from 2002 to 2023.
“This season has forced us all to reflect internally,” McIntosh remarked, indicating a shared commitment to improvement with Fickell’s leadership. The decision to retain Fickell also seems informed by the ongoing coaching carousel, where prestigious programs like Penn State and LSU are actively pursuing coaching talent.
Fickell’s buyout is projected to be around $25 million by season’s conclusion.
