NBA's Blueprint for a European League: Launching in 2027

The NBA's plans for a European league have been unveiled, targeting an October 2027 launch, with key cities chosen across the continent.

The NBA has expressed a keen interest in expanding internationally, an initiative that extends beyond simply hosting games in different nations. Commissioner Adam Silver has instigated discussions regarding the launch of an NBA Europe league, though details were previously scarce. Recently, George Aivazoglou, the managing director of NBA Europe, revealed some insights during a conference in Milan, Italy.

According to Silver, there has been a strong ownership interest from notable wealthy European and American families, presenting a robust backing for the league’s potential. Originally projected for a 2027 or 2028 start, Aivazoglou confirmed a targeted launch date of October 2027, per reports from The Associated Press.

The proposed league is expected to feature 16 teams, with 12 designated as permanent members. Aivazoglou listed potential host cities:

  • Great Britain: London and Manchester
  • France: Paris and Lyon
  • Spain: Madrid and Barcelona
  • Italy: Rome and Milan
  • Germany: Munich and Berlin
  • Greece: Athens
  • Türkiye: Istanbul

The remaining teams could secure entry by winning FIBA’s Champions League or through strong performances in their national leagues. While discussions with cities and clubs have yet to culminate in formal agreements, several EuroLeague teams, such as Real Madrid, are being considered as permanent members.

The initial season may not include all 16 teams; however, Aivazoglou maintains that this is the goal. The league is also contemplating the establishment of a new tournament post-launch, akin to the FIFA World Cup, but structured differently, focusing on teams rather than national representations. This initiative could pose competitive challenges for the NBA, as some international talents might opt to remain in Europe instead of joining NBA teams.
