The Detroit Lions had a new offensive play-caller during their Week 10, 44-22 win against the Washington Commanders, as coach Dan Campbell confirmed after the game that he assumed duties from offensive coordinator John Morton.
Speculation about this change was rife among fans and commentators alike. Campbell was spotted wearing reading glasses, holding a play sheet, and communicating through a headset during plays. He indicated that he sought to find a rhythm by changing things up slightly while highlighting the importance of collaboration:
“It was just, let’s try something a little different,” Campbell said in his postgame press conference. “Look, I know what I want to do, I know how I want to do it. Now, that being said, this is a collaborative effort. I was taking input from John Morton that whole time, and the other coaches …”
Campbell praised Morton as an ‘all team’ player, acknowledging his outstanding contributions during the game. Despite the Commanders not being known for a formidable defense, the Lions amassed a total of 546 offensive yards, achieving 30 first downs without punting once.
Thus far this season, the Lions’ offense has performed competently, ranking 11th in the NFL with an average of 350.8 total yards per game and 2nd in scoring with 29.9 points per game. After a surprising 27-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9, expectations were higher entering this game.
While the previous week saw quarterback Jared Goff under duress and star running back Jahmyr Gibbs managing a mere 28 yards, he rebounded with 172 yards and three touchdowns in this matchup.
Morton, having previously served with the Denver Broncos as their passing game coordinator, moved to the Lions this season, replacing Ben Johnson. He had worked alongside Campbell before, serving as the team’s senior offensive assistant prior to his role at Denver.
It appears that Campbell will continue to lead the offensive, reinforcing the notion that he embraces the significance of teamwork in this endeavor.
