TAMPA, Fla. — Mauricio Pochettino should’ve been pleased after leading the U.S. men’s national team to a remarkable 5-1 victory over Uruguay, a win that marked a significant milestone in the team’s storied history as it prepares for the 2026 World Cup.
The triumph at Raymond James Stadium made history as it was the first time the USMNT managed to score five goals against a South American opponent and equaled their record for the largest margin of victory over a top-15 FIFA-ranked team.
However, what stood out more than the victory itself was the youthful and inexperienced lineup Pochettino assembled, making nine changes from the previous match against Paraguay. This match notably excluded star players like Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, and Weston McKennie, among others. The starters had a combined 155 international caps, fewer than all-time leader Cobi Jones. Despite this, Pochettino underscored the significance of every squad member, emphasizing that no player, regardless of their prestige, is above the team dynamics.
After the game, midfielder Cristian Roldan noted the importance of maintaining a competitive spirit, stating that everyone on the team must bring their A-game consistently, as opportunities abound leading to the World Cup.
With only two friendly matches left until the final roster selection for the World Cup, Pochettino is tasked with making hard choices among eager and competitive players for a limited number of spots.
