USA's Pochettino Praises Bielsa as a Coaching Legend

Mauricio Pochettino reflects on his profound respect for Marcelo Bielsa as they prepare to meet on the sidelines.

TAMPA, Fla. — Mauricio Pochettino’s connection to Marcelo Bielsa dates back many years, starting with a memorable late-night encounter.

In a recount shared with SkySports in 2019, Pochettino recalled being just 13 years old, asleep in his room in Murphy, Argentina, when Bielsa, then only 30, visited under the guidance of Héctor Pochettino, Mauricio’s father.

As the reserve team manager at Newell’s Old Boys, Bielsa had just begun an illustrious coaching journey. He wanted to assess the sleepy youth, and after being impressed, he offered Pochettino a chance to train with the team. This pivotal moment led to Pochettino signing his first professional contract with the same club three years later.

Decades later, they are set to meet again as rival coaches, with the U.S. team facing Bielsa’s Uruguay in a friendly at Raymond James Stadium, home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“He was instrumental during my early football days,” Pochettino expressed, emphasizing his immense respect for Bielsa, saying, “I cannot view him as a friend or an average person; it’s a deep respect. It’s overwhelming.”

Pochettino’s career blossomed at Newell’s before he transitioned to Europe, playing notably for Espanyol and PSG, and participating in the 2002 World Cup.

Bielsa, after his invaluable guidance at Newell’s, went on to manage teams worldwide, significantly impacting soccer culture. His dedication made him a cult figure, especially during his time at Leeds United, bringing them back to the Premier League.

As Pochettino prepares for their face-off, he acknowledges Bielsa’s role in his advancement, stating, “I cherish my time with him. He played a vital role in my love for the game, motivating me towards coaching.”

When asked about facing Bielsa’s formidable Uruguay team, Pochettino added, “It will be a challenging match for us.”
