Baker Mayfield, the top overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, has had a career filled with unexpected turns. After starting with the Cleveland Browns, he had brief stints with the Carolina Panthers and the Los Angeles Rams. Despite only playing five games in Los Angeles, Mayfield regards that time as a crucial turning point for his career, which is currently seeing success leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Buccaneers are set to face the Rams this Sunday evening, marking Mayfield’s return to his former team. In reflection, he stated:
“There is no way for me to sugarcoat it – it was pivotal in my career and in my journey. I’ve told you guys that it helped me find the fun in football again – that joy.”
Although Mayfield’s time with the Rams was short, it was significant for his development as a player, particularly under the guidance of veterans like Matthew Stafford. He stated:
“They helped me out and helped me discover what offense I really want to play in. It was instrumental in my career, something I am forever grateful for, and it will be fun to go back and see some familiar faces.”
Having clearly found his stride with the Buccaneers, Mayfield led the team to playoff appearances in both 2023 and 2024. As they square off against the Rams, an important matchup awaits where both teams vie for playoff positioning.
