Rising Talents Shine as USMNT Signals Positive Change Ahead of World Cup

The US men's national soccer team finishes 2025 on a high note, showcasing an array of emerging talents and a promising tactical approach under head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

In a year of ups and downs, the U.S. men’s national team has faced uncertainty, yet things seem to be stabilizing as they prepare for World Cup 2026, co-hosted by the U.S. Their year ended on a high note with a dominant 5-1 victory over Uruguay, their first significant win under head coach Mauricio Pochettino, marking a three-match winning streak and a five-match unbeaten run.

The tactical shift to a back three, however, is not just about changing formations, as noted by defender Tim Ream. The USMNT, under Pochettino, has adjusted since the second half of a 2-0 loss to South Korea, indicating an evolution in their playing style that capitalizes on opponents’ mistakes.

This transformation is also attributed to year-long efforts from Pochettino and his coaching staff, making the team nearly unrecognizable from their previous encounters with Uruguay, which ended in a lifeless 1-0 defeat under ex-coach Gregg Berhalter. The inclusion of fresh talent has intensified competition for World Cup roster spots, supporting their high-tempo style of play, no matter who is on the pitch.

Pochettino has actively sought to widen the player pool, calling up around 70 players this year, cultivating a squad fully bought into his vision. The recent victory against Uruguay serves as a testament to this commitment, with Alex Freeman scoring two goals. “His passion and the trust he builds with players make them willing to give their all,” Freeman shared about Pochettino.

With their World Cup opener looming, the USMNT appears to be hitting their stride at the perfect time. Pochettino’s approach allows players the freedom to express creativity while requiring a solid commitment to teamwork. Defenders must be cohesive to thwart opposing attacks while finding opportunities to counterattack, ensuring the team is prepared to perform at its best come June.
