LSU Explores Possibilities of Ed Orgeron's Return with Lane Kiffin

LSU is considering Ed Orgeron as a potential assistant coach if Lane Kiffin takes over as head coach.

LSU is actively pursuing Lane Kiffin in a coaching search saga that continues to dominate the SEC news cycle. If LSU successfully recruits Kiffin as Brian Kelly’s successor, they are already considering candidates for assistant coaching roles, particularly Ed Orgeron, familiar to the LSU community.

Orgeron coached LSU to a national championship in 2019 and has been out of the coaching scene since his firing four years ago. Recently, he expressed his interest in returning to coaching, especially at LSU.

“I love LSU,” Orgeron said in October. “I still got my home in Baton Rouge. I loved when I coached with coach [Les] Miles as the defensive line coach. I love the Tigers. And I’m getting back to coaching. For sure I’d consider it. No doubt.”

Orgeron is a fitting choice for Kiffin’s staff, having developed a strong relationship over twenty years across various teams. They first worked together at USC during Pete Carroll’s successful tenure and reunited at Tennessee in 2009.

Before LSU can think about reappointing Orgeron, they must finalize negotiations with Kiffin, currently uncertain as he weighs his options between Ole Miss and potentially Florida. This week, Kiffin’s family toured both Gainesville and Baton Rouge, adding intrigue to the ongoing decisions involved.

Ohio State seeks clarification from Kiffin amid a lack of commitment from him, leading to speculation about whether he will coach during the postseason if concerns linger regarding his attention to the Rebels.
