Star third baseman Alex Bregman is moving on from the Houston Astros. He has reached an agreement with the Boston Red Sox on a three-year contract valued at $120 million, as reported by Chandler Rome. This agreement includes opt-outs after every season, but the team has yet to officially confirm the signing.
Bregman, who was selected by the Astros as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 draft, now joins a notable list of former Houston stars who have left the team via free agency, including Carlos Correa, Dallas Keuchel, and George Springer. Currently, Jose Altuve remains the only active member from the Astros’ golden era (2017-2022).
As for Bregman’s recent performance, he is experiencing a dip in productivity. Notably, he had a batting line of .260/.315/.453 in the previous season, hitting 26 home runs, which was his highest since a career-best of 41 in 2019. However, he also recorded a .315 on-base percentage, marking a significant decline from his career averages.
In terms of fitting with the Red Sox, the team hopes Bregman’s batting skills will thrive at Fenway Park, a venue that caters well to right-handed hitters. Historically, Bregman has been a powerful hitter, particularly at Fenway, where he has posted impressive offensive statistics.
With this signing, the Red Sox continue their proactive offseason, accompanied by recent acquisitions such as Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler.
The Red Sox finished above .500 but missed the playoffs in the last three seasons.
