NWSL Determined to Retain Trinity Rodman Amid European Interests
The NWSL looks to secure Trinity Rodman as interest from overseas clubs heats up.
NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman announced that the league “will fight” to retain Trinity Rodman amid increasing interest from various clubs, including those in England’s Women’s Super League and the USL Super League, as her contract with the Washington Spirit will end after this season.
Rodman is anticipated to become a free agent after this weekend’s NWSL Championship, where she plays against Gotham FC. Berman highlighted the competitiveness of the league and expressed a strong desire to keep top talent within the NWSL during a press conference, emphasizing the supportive atmosphere the league provides beyond just financial incentives.
“Specifically, as it relates to Trinity and candidly, any other top player in the world, we want those top players here in the NWSL and particularly, we want Trinity in the NWSL and we will fight for her and we are excited to see her compete in the championship on Saturday,” said Berman.
The NWSL’s salary cap, set at $3.3 million for 2026, limits the compensation teams can offer, prompting raised concerns about how it affects the ability to retain high-caliber players like Rodman. Berman assures that the NWSL remains a lucrative environment due to the extensive support for women’s sports within the U.S. market.
As several players choose to move to Europe recently, including Alyssa Thompson and Naomi Girma, Rodman’s potential departure would mark a significant shift in the landscape, given her prominence in the sport. Should she move to D.C. Power, this would represent a development-focused opportunity rather than a direct competitive environment to what she has at Washington Spirit.
