The underdog label may seem a bit misleading for Gotham FC, the 2023 NWSL champions who have consecutively reached the semifinals for three years. However, the 2025 season has presented its share of challenges, leading to the team finishing eighth in the regular season. Much of this decline stemmed from significant changes in their attacking lineup, creating interest for the offseason.
As Gotham prepares for the NWSL Championship against the Washington Spirit on Saturday (8 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+), a temporary solution has emerged in the form of Jaedyn Shaw. The U.S. women’s national team player, who joined Gotham from the North Carolina Courage in a September trade, has made an immediate impact with her scoring prowess.
During Gotham’s playoff run, Shaw has scored twice in crucial matches against the Kansas City Current and the Orlando Pride, which has propelled them into the finals. In a defining moment, she confidently stated, “Underdog my ass. We’re not an underdog.” Shaw has rapidly established herself as a key player for the team.
Gotham’s coaching staff, led by Juan Carlos Amoros, has prioritized a defensive stability that remains intact despite injuries, particularly after center back Tierna Davidson was sidelined with an ACL injury early in the season. The team has maintained solid defensive statistics, allowing an average of 0.9 goals per game this season.
While their attacking capabilities have diminished compared to last year, with a drop in average shots per game from 14.1 to 11.4, Shaw’s recent performance fills that gap. As Gotham awaits the championship match, the synergy between Shaw and MVP nominee Esther Gonzalez, who leads the team with 13 goals, promises to be crucial for their success.
Shaw’s performance and adaptation to Gotham’s tactical needs heighten anticipation for what she can achieve as the championship and future seasons unfold.
