Paul Pogba completed a remarkable journey back to the pitch on Sunday, making his debut for Monaco after missing 811 days from competitive soccer. The former Manchester United star received warm applause from fans at Roazhon Park when he entered the game in the 85th minute.

Though Pogba’s return was celebrated, Monaco suffered a 4-1 loss to Rennes, extending their disappointing performance in Ligue 1. The score felt secondary compared to Pogba’s personal achievement as he finally returned to what he loves.
From doping ban to redemption
Pogba’s comeback followed a challenging chapter, marked by a provisional suspension due to a positive drug test while at Juventus. Originally facing a four-year ban, this was reduced, allowing his return in March 2025. Monaco took a chance on him, and he is now back on the field, focusing on returning to full fitness.
“There were a lot of emotions. I was happy, but there’s a bit of sadness with the result,” he expressed to Ligue 1+.
He added, “In the short term, my goal is to get back to 100% readiness, play full matches, and contribute as much as possible to my team.”
A leader beyond the touchline
Coach Pocognoli believes in Pogba’s leadership qualities and his role in mentoring younger players. “Leaders, like Paul, must share their knowledge with the next generation, ensuring their success within the club’s legacy,” he commented.
Upcoming challenge
After a long absence filled with medical scrutiny, legal woes, and emotional strain, Pogba is back. Monaco finds themselves in eighth place, just two points shy of contention for higher rankings, with their next match against PSG on November 29, where Pogba aims to increase his playing time.
