Chris Paul Considers Retirement Ahead of Emotional Game in North Carolina
In a heartfelt message, Chris Paul hints at ending his illustrious career before a significant matchup against the Charlotte Hornets in his home state.
LA Clippers point guard Chris Paul hinted at potentially retiring before his team’s 131-116 victory over the Charlotte Hornets in what might be his last game in North Carolina, his home state.
The Winston-Salem native shared a highlight video on social media approximately 90 minutes prior to the game, showcasing his journey through a remarkable 21-year NBA career, including his days at Wake Forest.
Following the game, Paul opted out of interviews regarding his future and left the Spectrum Center, accompanied by a staff member.
He connected with family members post-game, sharing emotional moments of celebration.
In the game, Paul contributed with three points, eight assists, and three rebounds, making history as the first player in NBA to surpass 20,000 points, 12,000 assists, and 6,000 rebounds.
Expectations are that he will address the media before the Clippers’ upcoming match against the Los Angeles Lakers after returning to Los Angeles.
James Harden, who scored 55 points against the Hornets, commented he hadn’t seen Paul’s video before the game but understands that retirement looms.
“Twenty-one years,” Harden said. “At some time, you know it’s going to end, and Chris has already started his transition. He’s always networking for when that day comes for him.”
The 40-year-old Paul signed a one-year contract with the Clippers before the start of the season.
Clippers coach Tyronn Lue remarked, “It’s hard to think about retirement for someone who has dedicated so much to this game, and it’s a challenging time. He’s had an unbelievable career that positively impacted basketball.”
Paul was not available for remarks ahead of the game. He came into the matchup averaging just 2.5 points and 3.3 assists in a diminished role for the Clippers.
A twelve-time All-Star, Paul was selected as the fifth overall pick by the New Orleans Hornets in 2005 and has made the All-Defensive first team seven times. His career includes stints with seven different NBA franchises, and he has won two gold medals at the Olympics in 2008 and 2012.
