Five NFL Teams Likely to Experience a Drop in Performance by 2025

An analysis of five NFL teams that may struggle in the 2025 season, focusing on the Vikings and the Commanders.

The NFL saw several surprises in the 2024 season, with the Minnesota Vikings securing 14 victories and the Washington Commanders reaching the conference championship game for the first time since 1991. Notable disappointments included Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets, who finished with just five wins, alongside the San Francisco 49ers, who dropped significantly from being conference champions to only securing six wins.

Which teams are expected to falter in 2025? Here are the top candidates for a performance drop-off:

Minnesota Vikings (14-3)

Despite winning 14 games last season, the Vikings seem vulnerable following two consecutive losses to end the season, including a wild-card defeat against the Los Angeles Rams. The team must clarify its quarterback situation with Sam Darnold potentially leaving via free agency and J.J. McCarthy possibly taking the reins. Expectations for immediate success in the quarterback’s first starting year, especially post-ACL surgery, seem unrealistic.

While the Vikings have a talented roster, the competitive environment in the NFC North, paired with a decent number of potential double-digit winning teams, complicates their outlook for 2025.

Washington Commanders (12-5)

In Jayden Daniels’ inaugural season, the Commanders exceeded expectations with 12 wins and playoff appearances. However, the challenges of repeating this success loom large, especially with tough divisional matchups against the Eagles and a schedule against Detroit Lions and others that could prove difficult.

The team may have the tools to enhance their roster, including significant salary cap space, yet maintaining their last season’s momentum will be a significant challenge.

Pittsburgh Steelers (10-7)

Despite an ongoing tradition of successful seasons under Mike Tomlin, the Steelers recently showcased poorer performance trends, closing the 2024 season with five straight losses. They represent an unpredictable element within the AFC North and will need clarification in their quarterback strategies moving forward.

Denver Broncos (10-7)

The Broncos have seen success with a rookie quarterback but replicating their strong performance, particularly their defensive output, may prove complicated next season. They face significant challenges ahead, particularly in managing a competitive division.

Indianapolis Colts (8-9)

The Colts are in a transitional phase following the decision to bench Anthony Richardson. New coaching dynamics aim to improve the team’s defense, but lingering personnel issues and consistency remain hurdles for future effectiveness. With their recent struggles, there’s potential for decline unless major adjustments are made.
