Eric Morris: The Ideal Successor to Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State

Eric Morris is set to take the reins at Oklahoma State, bringing innovative offensive strategies and a promising roster.

Twenty years ago, Mike Gundy took over Oklahoma State and built one of the most electric programs in the sport. For years, Gundy’s teams were characterized by dynamic quarterback play and high-flying receivers. During the downturn that concluded his tenure, Gundy lost his direction. The program’s greatest coach was fired on Sept. 23 amid an 11-game losing streak against FBS teams. In his last two matches, Oklahoma State managed only 15 points.

By appointing Eric Morris, the Cowboys have secured the ideal successor to revitalize the program. Morris, previously coaching at North Texas, was named Oklahoma State’s next coach on Tuesday. He is expected to remain with the Mean Green through a prospective College Football Playoff appearance following a remarkable 10-1 season.

Morris’s innovative offense resonates with the best aspects of the Gundy era. His ability to win under challenging circumstances is noteworthy, as he has led the Mean Green to the pinnacle of the competitive American Conference. His reputation as a top-tier quarterback developer in college football is well-earned. Early in his career, he learned under Texas Tech luminary Kliff Kingsbury, including a five-year stint as Mahomes’ offensive coordinator. At small FCS Incarnate Word, he guided his team to a conference championship, discovering Cameron Ward, a future NFL Draft No. 1.

In recent times, he recognized little-known recruit John Mateer from DFW. He rejuvenated Chandler Morris’s career, securing a significant offer from Virginia. His latest success story features Drew Mestermaker, a quarterback enjoying a breakout season after never starting a varsity game in high school.

Mestermaker’s remarkable season has drawn attention, leading the nation in passing yards with 3,469, scoring 26 touchdowns against four interceptions. After his breakout, Oklahoma State is eager for first pick at him in the transfer portal.

Additionally, running back Caleb Hawkins has contributed impressively with 1,030 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns; he hails from Shawnee, Oklahoma. Receivers Wyatt Young and Miles Coleman will also join him, offering significant potential.

Historically, Oklahoma State has not produced an NFL draft pick at receiver since Tylan Wallace in 2021, nor a drafted quarterback since Mason Rudolph in 2018. They’ve struggled offensively, ranking lowest in the Big 12.

In 2025, North Texas led FBS in points per drive (3.88) and yards per play (7.4). They excelled in success rate, yards per pass, and explosive play rate.

Morris’s remarkable capacity to maximize resources sets him apart, having succeeded at lower-funded programs. Now at Oklahoma State, he will experience access to advantageous resources. His strong Texas connections are expected to enhance recruiting efforts.

Facing strong competition from offensive-minded coaches in the Big 12, he will need to navigate defensive challenges while adapting his approach to this league, which has experience countering Air Raid offenses.

Eighteen years after Gundy’s impactful declaration, Morris arrives in Stillwater, equipped with a robust résumé and a keen vision for modern college football. Although no one can truly replace Gundy, Morris embodies many of his finest traits, coupled with a fresh perspective poised to advance Oklahoma State’s future.
