Oklahoma State Appoints Eric Morris as New Coach, Succeeding Mike Gundy

Eric Morris, head coach of North Texas, will take over Oklahoma State following Mike Gundy's departure.

Oklahoma State has announced the hiring of Eric Morris as the new head coach, succeeding Mike Gundy. Morris leaves North Texas after leading the team to a 10-1 record this season, with a strong possibility of appearing in the College Football Playoff.

Morris, who has a record of 21-15 during his tenure at North Texas, will continue coaching through the season, including the American title game. Oklahoma State aims to revitalize a program that has struggled this season, currently holding a 1-10 record against FBS opponents.

Morris replaces Gundy following his dismissal and will address the program’s lagging progress in the NIL landscape and transfer portal, which have become critical for team competitiveness.

Quote from Chad Weiberg: “Today begins the next era of Oklahoma State Football. I am thrilled to introduce Eric Morris, his wife Maggie, and their boys Jack and George to the OSU Family. Coach Morris has proven his ability to build and lead winning football programs. He has consistently identified, recruited, and developed some of the best players in college football.”

Morris’s history with quarterbacks enhances his appeal to Oklahoma State, noted for his work with Patrick Mahomes during their time at Texas Tech. This season, he has developed another standout, Drew Mestemaker, who leads the FBS with 3,469 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and only four interceptions.

North Texas’s high-powered offense ranks among the nation’s leaders, standing out in points per drive and success rate, while Oklahoma State’s offensive metrics lag significantly behind.
