As Thanksgiving nears, it stirs a mix of emotions related to family and American football. For Antonio Freeman, a Green Bay Packers legend, this year is special as he celebrates his son’s ascent in soccer.
His son, Alex Freeman, is now a key defender for the U.S. men’s national soccer team, and his recent performances have positioned him for a potential spot on next year’s World Cup roster.
Just last week, Antonio witnessed Alex’s prowess during a match against Uruguay, where Alex notably dodged defender Ronald Araujo and scored in a decisive 5-1 victory.
Antonio Freeman, a Super Bowl XXXI champion and Packers Hall of Famer, cheered for his son from a suite at Raymond James Stadium, recalling fondly a prior match against Paraguay where Alex showed remarkable grit by overcoming three opponents.
“I’d never heard Alex ever talk about being in a fight,” Antonio shared. “Now here I am, witnessing him amidst a full-blown brawl.”
This moment ignited a fire in Alex, as he impressed during the following match against Uruguay. The 21-year-old, who previously had limited appearances with Orlando City, secured a starting position under coach Oscar Pareja and made his mark with a call-up to the U.S. squad for the Gold Cup this past summer.
Alex’s performance has paved the way for his significant role in the upcoming World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the U.S. with an expanded format allowing for 48 teams. His growth from an MLS prospect to a national team contender in under a year has surprised many, although Pareja sees his potential clearly.
“It doesn’t surprise me. Alex has displayed remarkable consistency since joining the academy,” Pareja remarked.
Freeman has made the most of opportunities presented to him, notably stepping in for the injured Sergiño Dest. His disciplined approach in training alongside top talents and his family background led to his quick rise.
Antonio talks about Alex’s late growth spurt, which didn’t occur until he was 15 or 16, and how his son now surpasses him in height.
“He’s always told me he wanted to be skillful on the field. Witnessing him maneuver past such tough defenses was just incredible,” Antonio expressed, impressed by Alex’s abilities against elite players like Araujo.
With the World Cup approaching, Alex prioritizes his form over any potential transfers, focusing on his performance. “I need to be ready for the most crucial period of my life,” he affirmed ahead of his breakout game.
Though separated from his father on Thanksgiving, both will be cheering for the Packers, as they anticipate following Alex’s journey in the World Cup next summer.
“Beating Paraguay and Uruguay hopefully woke up our U.S. fans,” Antonio said. “We have a blend of youth and experience, and we’re determined to put forth our best at the World Cup, aiming for victory.”
