Michigan State Set to Add Pat Fitzgerald as New Head Coach Following Jonathan Smith’s Dismissal
The Michigan State Spartans have moved swiftly to hire Pat Fitzgerald as their new head coach, replacing Jonathan Smith who was let go just hours earlier. This pivotal moment marks a significant strategy shift for the Spartans, ensuring that their recruitment process remains steady during the crucial early signing period this week.
Fitzgerald, previously at Northwestern for 17 seasons, returns to the Big Ten after a hiatus from collegiate coaching. With a notable record of achievements, he held the position of head coach from 2006 to 2022, culminating in impressive accolades and program records.
Under Fitzgerald’s leadership, Northwestern reached ten bowl games and garnered notable wins, including a triumph in the Citrus Bowl against Auburn. However, his tenure concluded under a cloud of controversy after allegations of hazing surfaced, ultimately leading to his dismissal in July 2023.
The Spartans’ prompt action reflects their commitment to optimizing their current roster and recruiting class, currently ranked No. 32 and 10th in the Big Ten. Fitzgerald aims to focus on retaining key commitments, particularly four-star wide receiver Samson Gash, as he prepares to establish his program in East Lansing.
Fitzgerald’s assessment of Michigan State’s roster will be vital as he enters this challenging yet exciting phase of his coaching career, especially with the winter transfer window approaching.
