Bill Cowher Critiques Lane Kiffin's Exit from Ole Miss
Hall of Fame coach Bill Cowher expresses disapproval over Lane Kiffin's decision to leave Ole Miss for LSU.
Lane Kiffin’s turbulent departure from Ole Miss to assume the role of LSU’s new coach has incited criticism, notably from Hall of Fame coach Bill Cowher.
Cowher and other members of the “NFL Today” crew addressed Kiffin’s controversial exit during their Week 13 coverage. They discussed his claim that he had requested — and been denied — the opportunity to coach Ole Miss through its upcoming College Football Playoff run. Kiffin reportedly gave former Ole Miss coaches an ultimatum to either join his staff at LSU or miss out entirely.
“I would say, why would you even ask that question?” Cowher remarked regarding Kiffin’s intent to continue coaching Ole Miss through the end of their season.
“Why would an AD let a coach who decided to move to LSU, rather than remain at Ole Miss, handle my players and use my coaches? That’s understandable. I would just say, ‘Thank you Lane, and goodbye.’”
Cowher also shared his perspective on any player considering playing for Kiffin in the future.
“Just understand one thing: it’s not about the program, it’s about Lane Kiffin. He doesn’t care about the players he spent a season with. He has decided to leave them behind, taking offensive coaches with him and harming the program. If I can’t see it through, I won’t allow you to do it either.”
Cowher clarified that while he supports Kiffin’s pursuit of new opportunities, he strongly condemns the manner of his departure.
“If you leave, then go and wish them well. Don’t disrupt the program or take any coaches with you. Let them finish what you started when you opted to go elsewhere. It’s acceptable, but don’t attempt to dismantle the program.”
“A football program encompasses more than just the head coach. It involves the assistants, the entire organization, and everyone who supported you during your tenure. You leave them behind. It’s not merely about you, Lane Kiffin.”
